Common counts range from 36 to 48 splines, while classic vehicles often use 25 or other specific counts.

- Carefully remove the centre pad.
- Loosen the retaining nut, but do not remove it completely.
- Rock and pull the steering wheel until it comes free from the taper.
- Count the splines on the steering column.
